The top of the cup (unit) opens up. there are glass beads that you pour into the cup. It takes approximately 15 minutes for it to heat up. The glass beads draw in the heat and distribute the heat throughout the cup. You place the ends of tools into the cup with the beads for 3 minutes. This will sanitize the tools. The cup includes full instructions for use.
